This case study is based on The New Musical Express also known as ‘NME’ which is a very popular music magazine published in the United Kingdom and has been publishing weekly since March 1952. The magazine is published through IPC Media (Time Inc). IPC Media is a leading publisher that produces 85 media brand as almost two thirds of UK 56% of women and 44% of UK men with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year. The Magazine was the first British magazine publication to include a singles chart which appeared in 1952 and in 1972 started to become closely linked with punk rock. During the 1960’s The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were commonly featured on the front cover as these artists appeared at the NME Poll Winners Concert, this award was known for artists being voted as most popular by the paper’s readers. These awards shows were recorded and edited and broadcasted on television as this started the trend of NME Concerts.
The magazine is sold today revolutionising the way we see music, its focus is to attract people who have interest in music and to grab the attention of people to try listen and have interest in music. The target audience is between 15 to 25 year olds as the material is only appropriate for this target audience, older age groups wouldn’t have any interest and young age groups would fail to understand the genre of music NME. The NME normally focuses on rock music and pop related groups as more people in the certain age group would get attracted to this.
The magazine is often advertised for publicity so the public can be aware of the company and its magazine. Also NME is widely promoted on television channels and most adverts such as Vo5 hair gell adverts as NME advertise their concerts on certain brand labels. NME is also known for its large festivals and concerts across the UK, which every year thousands of people attend to see famous artist from across the world performing on stage. ‘NME’ magazines are sold in newsagents across the UK and also in supermarkets and other stores which sell other magazines of its genre. ‘NME’ also publishes editions of its magazines online on their main website, as readers could have easy access to information and also have more access to more exclusive news and music information, as the NME website also contains, videos of concerts and music videos, photos of artists and press launches, reviews on singles and albums, personal blogs where people would post their views and get feedback and much more. In addition an
NME mobile application could also be found on mobile phones such as the ‘iPhone’ and also on tablet devices such as the ‘iPad’, which would be downloaded by a user in order to give them direct and instant online information straight to their smart phone/tablet, as this makes it easier as you wouldn’t have to carry a paper format of the magazine as reading from an electronic device would be easy and portable.
NME also offered there greatest fans their very own TV channel as this was aimed directly to their targeted audience who enjoyed listening the rock and roll genre of music. This TV channel was first aired to viewers on the 22nd November 2007 till the 5th January 2012, during this time period NME TV aired many of their music concerts, interviews which attracted their audiences massively. Due to how NME TV was owned by CSC Media as they aired the channel, CSC Media airs many channels as this became one of the reasons why NME TV came off air as the company already airs many chart show channels ranging from many different genres.
An NME radio station is available for their targeted audience as this began broadcasting on the 24th June 2008 as this is owned by IPC Media, Town and Country Broadcasting. The radio station was set to attract their targeted rock audience into songs and live interviews; the radio station was also broadcasted as DAB radio as it could be viewed on TV and also offered their audience an online format of the radio station to allow the ability of ease within their targeted audience.

This cover of NME is an issue which was released on the 12th August 1996, which on the front page advertises the battle between Britpop groups ‘Oasis’ and ‘Blur’. As in those decades were two main Britpop groups.
This is one of the most recent additions of an NME magazine which has been published, as this is one of the basic and interesting layouts in which NME use whilst distributing their magazines.
This is NME iPhone/iPod application which is available to download from the Appstore for 69p, as NME’s targeted audience would be able to view music videos along with many interviews as they can read new music stories as this all would be available on the device.
This is the NME TV logo which includes a slogan ‘Great Music First’ as this would directly appeal to their targeted audience, this logo and slogan was used to advertise the TV channel to its UK audience.
In this NME Radio logo they have advertised a recent concert tour by HP as this is aimed directly to its targeted audience so they can be aware of this tour also publishing how it is hosted by NME Radio.
